A lot of news came out yesterday at the Apple media event launching the new iPods. Aside from the new hardware releases there were a number of software releases including iPhone OS 3.1 and iTunes 9. A couple of other interesting things to note.
Apple has discounted the iPhone 3.x upgrade for iPod Touch owners from $9.95 to $4.95. So, those holding out can now get the 3.x upgrade for cheaper. The 3.0 -> 3.1 upgrade is free. Of course, if you are already planning on buying one of the new iPod Touches, you can skip it altogether, since the new ones come with OS 3.1 already installed.
Another important thing to note if buying a new iPod Touch is that only the high end (32GB and

We don't have any details to report aside from what just appeared on the EA mobile Facebook page, but these screenshots do look great, and it's hard to argue with such an extensive list of licensed cars. The console version of the game is due in September and unlike their previous Need For Speed title, Shift is more of a sim racer rather than an arcade racer.
Like most Gameloft games, it's easy to find games to compare Dungeon Hunter to. It definitely has a strong scent of Diablo to it, but the graphics seem straight out of the Microsoft PC game, Dungeon Siege. Regardless of what comparisons you make, Dungeon Hunter seems like a solid hack and slash that I could see myself spending a embarrassing amount of time playing.
Gameloft's port of Earthworm Jim is, well, Earthworm Jim. If you're unfamiliar with the game, it originally appeared on the Sega Genesis in 1994, and since then saw ports on numerous platforms soon to be including the XBOX 360 via XBOX Live Arcade, the PS3 via PlayStation Network, and the Wii via WiiWare.
The story begins with a high tech super suit falling from space and landing directly on top of an earthworm named Jim. The suit somehow mutates him in to a larger earthworm capable of controlling its various functions. Jim overhears the villains of the game discussing devious plans regarding Princess What's Her Name (Yes, that's really her name) and Jim decides to to go on an adventure to save the princess from killer golfish, evil cats, and queens with slugs for butts. Tiger Style's first entry into the iPhone market kicks off with this very interesting game description:
You are a spider. One afternoon, you discover an abandoned mansion. Where is the family who lived here? What happened, and why did they leave? Search for clues as you adventure from room to room on the hunt for your next meal.
And the game is as unique as it sounds. Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor is a beautifully created action (adventure?) game that places you in the role of a spider who must spin webs in order capture enough food to make it to the next level. Use up too much silk between meals and you won't survive.

The iPhone has so far seen both 2D (Car Jack Streets) and 2.5D (Payback) GTA-clones but, as yet, iPhone gamers have not had a fully 3D world in which to wreak the particular sort of inner-city mayhem that has made the genre so popular. Thanks to Gameloft, that's about to change.
Yesterday Touch Arcade visited Gameloft's Manhattan studio to have a look at a preview build of their upcoming Grand Theft Auto-like iPhone title Gangstar: West Coast Hustle.
I spent the afternoon chatting with Bruce Morrison of Freeverse regarding their upcoming title which was shown at the iPhone Launch Party, Warp Gate. A game that is sounding more and more ambitious each time I hear about it, Warp Gate is a galactic conquest and trading game that is working up to having an amazing amount of depth for an iPhone game.

Two notable iPhone games that we enjoyed and covered in the past have received free, lite versions.
The level complexity, 3D rendering, and cinematics come together to deliver an impressive experience. For fans of the "Hack n' Slash" genre, the overall production value of the paid app and the fun to be had is likely worth the $5.99.
The free, lite version [App Store] features only a very short first level (versus eight of the full release), but should give a basic feel for the paid app to those debating the purchase.

I-play has released a new racer for the iPhone called Fast and Furious: Pink Slip [App Store]. The $5.99 mobile game was recently previewed by IGN who had a chance to play with an early BREW and Java version.
Designed as a pure arcade-style racer instead of a more narrative-driven game like the previous entry in the series, Fugitive, Pink Slip is exactly what the title promises: A series of breakneck races where your wheels are always on the line. The racing is sprea

Some of the most intense, adrenaline-pumping racing action ever seen on a game console comes thanks to the futuristic, anti-gravity racing franchise, Wipeout. The original, highly acclaimed Wipeout from Psygnosis made its debut on the PlayStation back in 1995 and put the player in the pilot's seat of a variety of sleek anti-gravity racing vehicles. The game challenged them to hurtle at breakneck speed down a series of unearthly metallic tracks while dodging enemy mines, missiles, and various other futuristic forms of weaponry. The sense of speed and immersion was immense and made for a pure white-knuckle gaming experience.
I'm a huge fan of the franchise and have been since day one. (In fact, it was Wipeout–alone–that prompted me to buy my first PlayStation.) As such, it has pained me to realize that there will never be an official Wipeout title brought to the iP

Sandlot Games has released an App Store title that–and we'll come right out and say it–is one of the best games available for the iPhone and iPod touch. Snail Mail [App Store] is a kart-style racer in which the player controls a racing snail on a mission to collect packages and deliver them to the farthest reaches of the universe while dodging obstacles such as laser towers, slugs, asteroids, and salt (it burns!).
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Polarbit, the developer behind Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D and Raging Thunder has released another racing game for the iPhone. This time though, it's an acquaitc affair in the vein of Midway's Hydro Thunder. Wave Blazer [App Store] puts the player at the wheel of a high-powered jet boat that races along various harrowing courses in an effort to grab the gold.
It takes a certain kind of person to strap themselves down in what basically amounts to an over-sized arrowhead with a four-tho

iPhone developer ATOD AB has recently released Fastlane Street Racing [App Store], a Ridge Racer-style racing game that has generated much commentary–most of it rather positive–in the App Store user reviews and our forums since its release.
The first thing that hits you about Fastlane is the game's graphics quality. Fastlane is the best looking iPhone racer, hands down. What's more, the game runs at a decent framerate and experiences very few slow-downs. Of course, you're racing only three other vehicles and the on-road traffic is at a bare minimum, but still–it's a lovely looking game.

Mobile developer Polarbit currently has two solid games on the iPhone: Raging Thunder and Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D, both of which have been very well reviewed.
Yesterday, we received a tip that Polarbit would be bringing two additional titles to the iPhone by the end of this year. These are said to include Wave Blazer and then Armageddon Squadron.
While we haven't gotten confirmation of these plans, it would certainly be no surprise to us that Polarbit would be further investing in the iPhone platform after the huge success of Nitro Kart. With the high quality of their current apps, we are very much looking forward to these titles.
One of the very first iPhone jailbreak games I played was Raging Thunder [App Store], a 3D racer from Polarbit. It was rough around the edges, sported a rather crude menu interface, and was perhaps the most impressive iPhone game available at the time. That was months ago, and since then the iTunes App Store and iPhone 2.0 have arrived, making iPhone gaming "official." And thanks to Polarbit's recent App Store release, Raging Thunder is now official as well.
Happily, the new Raging Thunder is far more polished than the the original, jailbreak incarnation.
Like the recently released Asphalt 4

Yesterday we posted a quick "first look" at Gameloft's just-released iPhone racer Asphalt 4 Elite Racing [App Store]. We've since spent more time with this title and wanted to share our thoughts.
Asphalt 4 Elite Racing is a 3D auto racing game that features 28 different vehicles (Corvette, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Bugatti to name a few) and nine different venues (New York, Paris, Dubai, Shanghai, etc.). The iPhone version of the game is a port of the original mobile version which is available for a wide variety of platforms.
As we recently reported, Handmark Inc. has released GTS World Racing [App Store] through the iTunes App Store. After spending some time with this title, we can recommend it as a solid iPhone racer.
Unlike the popular Crash Bandicoot Nitro Cart 3D and Cro-Mag Rally which are kart racers that put a priority on the "zany" or "fun" elememts of racing, GTS Word Racing is one of the two App Store racing titles that strives to capture a more realistic racing experience (the other being Wingnuts Moto Racrfrom Freeverse).
Freeverse was one of the early development houses who jumped into iPhone gaming. Freeverse has been a long standing Mac developer with dozens of gaming titles.
The much anticipated Wingnuts Moto Racer [App Store] is amongst their first games for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The OpenGL 3D racing game offers accelerometer (tilt) based controls in a classic arcade-style racing game.
The iTunes App Store just landed and there are lots of games out there. I doubt anyone has had a chance to experience them all–we here at Touch Arcade surely haven't. It's been a rather busy day.
That said, in my admittedly limited expierience of the full game catalog, here at the close of the iPhone 3G / iPhone 2.0 launch day, I must point to Cube Runner [App Stor

Do you suffer from the dreaded and painful Floating Steering Wheel Grip, bane of the hardcore Wii gamer? Do you weep when you must power off Mario Kart and head out the door for school or work? Well, if you're an iPhone or iPod touch user, Polarbit is here with the answer: Crash Bandicoot Nitro Kart 3D.
The nefarious Nitrous Oxide has joined forces with evil genius Dr. Cortex and his demented side-kick Ripper Roo, in a plot to beat the Bandicoots into submission once and for all, and at long last clear the way for world domination. In order to lure Crash and his gang out in the open, they stage a Kart tournament. The winners will be crowned “Kings Of Kart Racing For All Eternity”, the losers will be banished from N. Sanity Island.
As we recently reported, Laminar Research has released a "mini-version" of its hugely popular, realtime physics-based flight simulator X-Plane 9 for the iPhone [App Store]. We've recently logged some flight time with this title and are anxious to share our thoughts.
X-Plane 9 for the iPhone is based on the desktop version of X-Plane 9, which is available for Mac OS X, Linux, and Windows. X-Plane sets itself apart from other flight simu
