img_0004-4I’ve had my hands on a semi-exclusive preview copy of Luc Bernard’s turn-based strategy game, Mecho Wars for a while now.  I know it’s kind of cliche to compare any portable turn-based strategy game to Advance Wars, but Mecho Wars is hard to liken to anything else. Just like as in UniWars, the touch interface works great in this game, and really feels just like playing Advance Wars on the DS with the stylus.

In the preview copy, there are two factions waging war against each other: The Landians and the Winged Crusade. E ... Read more »

The 1.2 update for Firemint's brilliant pick up and play classic, Flight Control [App Store] just landed at its destination. If for some strange reason you don't have Flight Control yet, it's a devilishly simple game where you have a single task: successfully land as many aircraft as possible. Different planes and helicopters fly in from the side of the screen, you tap them then draw a path to lead them to their runway or landing pad without colliding with anything else.

Notable Japanese developer Square Enix has recently released their second game to the iPhone and iPod Touch: Vanguard Storm [App Store].

The company has previously released a tower defense game called Crystal Defenders. While the first version of that game received a lot of criticism for a poor interface, many of those who stuck with the game claim it is one of the best tower defense games in the App Store. Crystal Defenders has since been updated to version 2.0 which addresses the awkward interface issues of the original release.

3441544531_1d56b47a47jpgA few weeks ago I reviewed Xpressed's UniWar [App Store] and while it exceeded all of my expectations for a good turn based strategy game on the iPhone, it wasn't without its flaws. Last night UniWar 1.0.1 hit the App Store–The first of a set of two updates aimed at squashing bugs, adding functionality, and a ... Read more »

star_defense_splash_screen_01The last we saw of Ngmoco's upcoming tower defense title Star Defense was at the studio's San Francisco offices during GDC 2009. At that time, the game engine looked remarkable and they were still tweaking the gameplay before the final release.

Ngmoco released new screenshots and a video today in the lead up to the May release of the title.

In Star Defense, players take control of the captain's chair and travel to a series of planets invaded by alien S’rath forces. Twisting and spinning complete 3-D ... Read more »

When the iPhone was first unveiled by Steve Jobs during the Macworld 2007 keynote, most of the people in attendance stared in slackjawed amazement.  During those two hours we were exposed to perhaps the most innovative mobile device ever created.  So much cutting edge technology all wrapped up in a multitouch / accelerometer-based package.  And when, a year later, Apple announced the freely available iPhone SDK, it was immediately clear that what we'd seen from the iPhone so far was just the tip of the iceberg.  And my first thoughts?  Gaming–and no surprise.

We knew then that amazing things were to come… And they have.  There are currently over 20,000 applications in the iTunes App Store–a large number of them games.  And while, true, many (most?) aren't particularly noteworthy, there are some true gems out there. ... Read more »
