Forum superstar and night owl WunDaii discovered Worms [App Store] becoming available for download just before 5:00 AM this morning, and since then our forum has been host to a lively debate as members purchase the game.
Worms is a turn based artillery-style combat game developed by Team17 Software based on a series of over a dozen previous Worms titles starting with the original in 1995. You control a small team of several worms and during the game, players take turns attacking with a large variety of weapons to either kill or drown enemy worms.
Pipe Mania [App Store] was originally developed by The Assembly Line in 1989 for the Amiga. Soon after, it was ported to various other platforms by LucasFilm Games (who called it Pipe Dream), and since then it's appeared on nearly ever platform in existence. I spent the afternoon chatting with Bruce Morrison of Freeverse regarding their upcoming title which was shown at the iPhone Launch Party, Warp Gate. A game that is sounding more and more ambitious each time I hear about it, Warp Gate is a galactic conquest and trading game that is working up to having an amazing amount of depth for an iPhone game.

While certain genres on the App Store are completely over-saturated (Match three, I'm looking at you.) there had been a distinct lack of turn based strategy games, which is a shame as the few that exist all work so well with touch controls. This morning I met with Aurelien Kebeci, CEO of the French development group Agharta Studio to see their upcoming game, Rogue Planet. Previously known for 1112 [App Store], Kebeci blew me away with what he had to show me.

As mentioned in an earlier post, Apple's WWDC keynote took place this morning and the new iPhone 3G S, the fastest member of the iPhone family, was announced. On the software front, iPhone OS 3.0 took center stage and a number of games and apps were demonstrated that utilize OS 3.0 functionality. Among them were Gameloft's Asphalt 5 and ngmoco's (just released) Star Defense. We were able to capture brief videos of the games in action during the keynote.
Gameloft's Mark Hickey demonstrated Asphalt 5, which he calls the best racing game on the iPhone. Featuring online (WiFi) multiplayer and peer-to-peer (Bluetooth) one-on-one, Asphalt 5 will take advantage of iPhone OS 3.0 by offering content packs for sale ($.99 for a new racetrack + three new cars).
